Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
