The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
