Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
